POTOČARI, July 11 (FENA) – The EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, said in a video message shown today at the Srebrenica commemoration, that there is no place in the European Union for those who deny genocide and glorify war criminals.
He pointed out that the crimes in Srebrenica were recognized as an act of genocide before two international courts, and that the established facts should be acknowledged.
“We want BiH to progress on the European path, and the recognition of our past helps us to progress,” said Varhelyi.
He added that it is a common duty today to remember the Srebrenica genocide – one of the worst crimes in recent European history, where Bosnian Serb forces deliberately and systematically murdered more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in the UN safe area.
Varhelyi stressed that Europe has not forgotten its own responsibility for its inability to prevent and stop war and genocide.
– It is important to repeat the same message every year – Srebrenica is a constant reminder of our shared responsibility to prevent genocide from ever happening again. Therefore, it is our duty to remember Srebrenica forever,” Varhelyi underlined.
